What Is Etching?

Etching, also known as photochemical machining or chemical milling, is a subtractive manufacturing process that uses chemical solutions to precisely remove material from metal sheets. The process involves:

• Photoresist application: A light-sensitive film is applied to the metal surface.

• Exposure & development: A digital pattern is transferred onto the coated metal using UV light.

• Etching: Chemical solutions dissolve unprotected areas, leaving precise patterns.

• Stripping & finishing: The remaining photoresist is removed, and optional finishing treatments are applied.

This method produces burr-free, stress-free components with exceptional accuracy, making it ideal for encoder discs that require intricate patterns and tight tolerances.
